01.08.10 | Krannert Center Awarded Andrew W. Mellon Grant

Our commitment to classical music was cemented before ground was broken for the Center in 1969, and over the years we have celebrated the greatest musicians at the pinnacle of their powers and emerging talents rocketing toward their peak. From the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Juilliard String Quartet, and the Eroica Trio to Malcolm Bilson, Isaac Stern, and Joshua Bell to Luciano Pavarotti, Frederica von Stade, and Cecilia Bartoli to Terry Riley, Steve Reich, and the Philip Glass Ensemble, we value the unceasing relevance of classical music to today’s world.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation supports opera companies, orchestras, theatre groups, modern dance companies, as well as performing arts complexes. With this shared $1.9 million grant, the foundation has selected Cal Performances at the University of California at Berkeley, the University Musical Society of the University of Michigan, and Krannert Center as leaders in assuring that classical music remains at the forefront of the arts world. With these funds, we can deepen our offerings, share this art form with our community, and move classical music outward toward new audiences, fresh approaches, and heightened enjoyment. We are deeply grateful for this opportunity to bring classical music greater attention. For more information on the grant and our fellow awardees, please read the press release.
