02.08.10 | The Grammys Honor Krannert Center Artists
What do the 2009-10 Krannert Center season and this year’s Grammy Awards have in common? The San Francisco Symphony, Michael Tilson Thomas, Derek Trucks, and Booker T.—and that’s just for starters.
If you were one of the 25.8 million viewers who tuned in to the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards or have perused the list of the winners in the days since, you probably spied quite a few names you recognized as performers on Krannert Center stages. In addition to those lucky winners mentioned above, Joshua Redman and Nathan Gunn are also the proud new owners of those nifty little statues. Redman was featured on Yo-Yo Ma’s winning recording Songs of Joy and Peace, while Gunn earned his for singing the music of Britten’s Billy Budd.
The current season also showcases nominees Luciana Souza (whose ebullient Brazilian singing lit up ELLNORA | The Guitar Festival) and Mavis Staples (who will perform with Booker T. and JJ Grey on March 30 in What It Is!). Incidentally, ELLNORA alum Derek Trucks beat out Staples in the contemporary blues category, also besting his own wife, Susan Tedeschi!
Many other winners and nominees at this year’s Grammy Awards have appeared in recent Krannert Center seasons, including Chick Corea and John McLaughlin’s Five Peace Band, the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, Odair and Sergio Assad, Natalie MacMaster, The Greencards, Mamadou Diabate, Tiempo Libre, Shawn Colvin, and the Guarneri String Quartet.
Next week double-winner Bela Fleck will be in town for his upcoming Krannert Center-sponsored show entitled The Africa Project at the Canopy Club on Sunday, February 14.
We’re thrilled and honored to present performances by these world-renowned and Grammy-recognized artists. Make plans now to see them in action.
